The Art of Soapstone
share

Known as Egwarè in Kenya, soapstone is renowned for its beautiful feel and distinctive colouration. The one-of-a-kind pieces in our Egware Collection have been meticulously hand-carved from soapstone by independent craftsmen and women.

A little about soapstone
Soapstone is a metamorphic rock consisting of mineral talc. It is naturally formed in pale shades of white, peach-ish hues with pink and grey tones. Black is the hardest and rarest form. Its durability makes it easy to carve and colour. Creativity has no bounds when it comes to this product.

Unique to Western Kenya, soapstone is believed to be about 300 to 400 million years old. There are different quarries for different colours and all the mining is done by hand with no machinery used. Each piece carved from this soapstone is also 100% handmade.
